New Belgium Brewing located in Fort Collins, Colorado is a large scale brewery with a small scale impact on the world... carbon impact that is. New Belgium is one of the few green breweries in North America; meaning that the brewery gets its energy from a natural source. The wind! This naturally replenishing energy source accounts for lower energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint (CO2 emissions estimated to be reduced in the multi-million pounds since 1998). Now onto the beers! New Belgium has a wide range of Belgium style ales to choose from; most notably Fat Tire Amber Ale and 1554 Belgian Style Black Ale. Their selection is comparible to Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, NY, however their size is not. Interestingly enough New Belgium is the twelfth largest brewery in the nation with 200+ employees. Similar "green minded" breweries include Steamworks Brewing in Vancouver, British Columbia. Steamworks, as the name implies gets some of it's energy to run the brewery by tapping into an old steam pipe that was once used to generate electricity for the city. New Belgium |
